In Part I of Southern Pioneers of Hip-Hop, DSHH highlighted the influence OutKast and Master P had on letting the hip-hop world know “the South has something to say”. Today, we continue the series by highlighting pioneer and hip-hop artist Scarface from the legendary Houston group Geto Boys.

Brad “Scarface” Jordan began his career as DJ Akshen in Houston, TX deejaying for a local record label. In 1989, he joined the Geto Boys replacing one of their members and changed his name to Scarface, based on the 1983 film. Geto Boys recorded their second album Grip It! On That Other Level that was kept from being played on the radio and MTV due to its violent lyrics.

Scarface released his debut solo album Mr. Scarface Is Back in 1991. The album peaked at number 51 on Billboard 200 and overshadowed the rest of the Geto Boys. Scarface received the 2001 Source Awards Lyricist of the Year after releasing The Diary and The Last of a Dying Breed.

In 2000, after releasing several solo albums, Scarface went on to become the president of Def Jam South where he signed Atlanta artist Ludacris. He has worked with other artists such as Drake, John Legend, Freeway, and Tech N9ne. In 2019, Scarface ran for Councilperson for District D of the Houston City Council; however, he was defeated by Carolyn Evans-Shabazz in a run-off election.
