The last 24 hours have been a whirlwind for Nick Cannon. In a soundbite from his podcast, Cannon suggests that black people are naturally more compassionate. He might have known that his comments were going to spark some outrage because he prefaced them by saying ‘imma say this carefully”. His comments were deemed hateful and Anti-Semitic. Viacom, the company that owns multiple TV stations, more specifically MTV, which has been home to Nick’s show Wild N’ Out for 15 years didn’t hesitate to fire Cannon.
Usually when things happen the person that is in the hot seat goes on an “apologizing tour”, but not Nick. He is fired back in a lengthy Facebook post. Nick stated, “For Viacom to be so deceptive is no surprise; they have been mistreating and robbing our community for years, underpaying talent on their biggest brands like ‘love & Hip Hop, all of BET programming and of course Wild N’ out”. Cannon is also demanding full ownership of Wild N’ Out, which is estimated to be worth a billion dollars. He says he attempted to reach out and speak with Viacom executive Shari Redstone, but his attempt was unsuccessful. Cannon seems to have a lot of support via social media, many don’t feel he said anything wrong, or far from the truth. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
