NBA Youngboy vs Roddy Ricch

Never Broke Again or Ricch?

NBA Youngboy announced the release of his new album Top this past Thursday, Aug. 20, along with the album artwork. Fans were quick to point out the similarities between this album cover and Roddy Ricch’s cover for Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial. Roddy’s album released in December 2019, and it featured a portrait of him in black and white. NBA Youngboy’s album cover uses very similar themes, including a near identical plain black shirt. There are a few key differences between the two. Youngboy wears an empty and unfocused expression with stacked, diamond encrusted Cuban link chains on display. Roddy, however, has a look of determination and subdued hunger, with his jewelry subtly tucked inside of his shirt.

Tweet and Delete

After the release of the album cover Roddy Ricch tweeted, and later deleted, what seems to be his feelings on the subject. While he did not tag anybody on the post, it does seem that he was focusing his attention on NBA Youngboy. Judging by the tone of his tweets though, it doesn’t seem that Roddy has a problem with NBA Youngboy. It seems his problem lies with the constant comparisons he receives to any other artist doing something remotely similar to him. Whether he did it purposely or not, NBA Youngboy has yet to comment on the situation.

This issue is not a new phenomenon in hip-hop. The culture has seen a number of artists dancing a fine line between inspiration and imitation. Meek Mill, among others, has been accused of stealing from other artists as well.

Where do we go from here?

With the current tension between the two artists, it is easy to forget that they have worked together before. NBA Youngboy released  a music video less than two months ago for his song “On My Behalf,” featuring Roddy Ricch. There have also been tweets between the two artists showing appreciation.

Hopefully this issue does not escalate any further, but until NBA Youngboy addresses the situation, all we can do is wait and see.
