On Monday, July 13, Naya Rivera’s body was found in Lake Piru after investigators spent six days searching. Her body was found floating in the Northeast area of the lake where the water is between 35-60 feet deep.
We know that Naya rented a boat with Josey around 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Three hours later Josey was discovered in the boat by himself wearing a life jacket. Josey told the police that he and his mother went swimming. She “boosted him onto the deck” of the boat. When her son looked back, he seen her “disappear under the surface of the water.”. We believe that there were strong currents in the lake that Wednesday afternoon and Naya had the strength to push her son back on the boat but sadly not herself.
On July 14, the Ventura County medical examiner confirmed Naya’s death. The autopsy report says “ the body has been x-rayed and a full autopsy has been performed”. The autopsy findings are consistent with drowning and the conditions of the body are consistent with the time that she was submerged. The report also states “no traumatic injuries or disease processes were identified” at the time of the autopsy. There is no indication from the investigation of examination that drugs or alcohol played a role in the decedent’s death, but specimens will be submitted for toxicology testing. The report confirms that Naya Rivera died from accidental drowning in lake Piru. DSHH sends our deepest condolences to the Rivera Family.
