Tyson Accuses Streaming Platform of Releasing Unauthorized Docu-Series
Legendary boxer “Iron” Mike Tyson has an ax to grind with Hulu following the announcement that they would release a docu-series without his consultation.
On Thursday (February 25), Tyson took to his Instagram to shed light on the fact that he was not receiving any money from the making of Hulu’s series on his life.
Tyson expressed that Hulu’s choice “although unfortunate, isn’t surprising”. The post contained a passage that mentioned that companies like Hulu “represent the systematic racism that has plagued Hollywood for its entire existence”
Since his retirement, Mike has been an advocate for many social justice issues and has not been shy about expressing his thoughts.
Tyson believes that Hulu and companies like them “ hide behind ploys and praise themselves for offering tone-deaf attempts at diversity and inclusion”
Within the caption of this post against Hulu, Tyson further elaborated on why he believed the media giant was wrong for releasing the unauthorized mini-series:
“This announcement on the heels of social disparities in our country is a prime example of how Hulu’s corporate greed led to this tone-deaf cultural misappropriation of the Tyson life story.”
“To make this announcement during Black History Month only confirms Hulu’s concern for dollars over respect for black story rights. Hollywood needs to be more sensitive to black experiences especially after all that has transpired in 2020. “
“The real Mike Tyson authorized story is in development and will be announced in the coming days. Hulu to announce stealing a black athlete’s story during Black History month couldn’t be more inappropriate or tone-deaf. #boycotthulu #corporategreed”
The issues that Tyson is facing are not being compensated by Hulu are very similar to the issues that Dave Chappelle faced in not being paid by Netflix or HBO Max for the streaming of his hit “Chappelle’s Show” because of his original deal with Comedy Central.
Like Tyson, Chappelle was unhappy with being mistreated and undervalued for his work but was eventually compensated after fans boycotted his show on his suggestion.
Tyson is hoping to see justice done in a similar capacity in his situation.
