Jermaine Dupri’s The Rap Game has captivated millions of people into watching a group of 5 teens battling out for a record deal at So So Def. The show first aired in 2016. Fast-forwarding 4 years later, Jermaine Dupri reflects on the potential of his contestants.
Does Jermaine Dupri regret his decisions after the Rap Game?
Dupri was questioned if he was shocked for the level of success that his former contestants have following the show.
“It’s supposed to happen,” after further explaining the point of his show. “That’s how I look at it. People ask me if I’m surprised all the time. I’m not surprised because I picked them. I don’t think people realize it. The funniest part about this whole thing is that people keep acting like, especially with J.I” J.D responded.
Even though New York’s up and coming artist was not the winner of the second season of The Rap Game, Jermaine Dupri proceeds to explain how he gets constantly asked about him the most.
“People don’t understand, I personally picked this guy to be on my TV show. I knew exactly what he was way before anybody. Before he even knew what he was. I knew exactly what he was… Every time I see him doing something, I’m 100 percent ecstatic about it because I love seeing how they go from…that’s my thing. I love seeing people go from scratch to being successful. When I started, I had a vision that they could always be that,” Dupri stated.
What has J.I been doing after the Rap Game?
J.I the Prince of N.Y or J.I. has been doing well ever since the Rap Game. Although he didn’t win the chain or the deal to be signed to So So Def, he has been making a name for himself. His 2019 breakout single “Need Me” surpassed over 50 million views on Youtube. J.I’s popularity has led him to 1.7 million Instagram followers and 4.7 million monthly users on Spotify. Not winning the Rap Game did not stop J.I from completing his dream of representing his brands and New York. On November 25, he signed to Interscope Records. Many other well-known artists such as Billie Eilish, Gwen Stefani, Imagine Dragons, Summer Walker, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey, Maroon 5, and Selena Gomez are also signed to this label.
