Is SpongeBob being Disrespectful Towards Creator?

SpongeBob Squarepants has inspired two movie films, a Broadway musical, many fan-favorite Bikini Bottom themed merchandise, and most importantly a joyful memory to kids with the happy-go-lucky SpongeBob. But until the announcement of a new spinoff featuring side characters from the original television show it had caused some opinions and disagreements to arise.

So what’s The New SpongeBob Spinoff about?

Nickelodeon is reportedly working on a SpongeBob Squarepants spin-off about his starfish best friend “The Patrick Show.”

According to close sources, SpongeBob’s best friend Patrick will now be getting his own spinoff show called “The Patrick Star Show.” The show will be focused on the goofy pink starfish which will be voiced by the original voice actor Bill Fagerbakke. Nickelodeon is believed to receive a 13-episode order for the short series and according to other sources, it is expected to show the starfish as the host of his own late-night talk show. The Patrick Star Show is said to be designed and similar to The Larry Sanders Show and Comedy Bang! Bang! Nickelodeon also reports showing several new characters.

Stephen Hillenburg’s Thoughts on the Spinoff:

After the death of SpongeBob’s show creator Stephen Hillenburg on November 26th of 2018 many fans of the long-running television show, we’re surprised to hear the news of a new spinoff featuring SpongeBob’s lovable sidekick Patrick Star. In a 2009 interview with Television Business International in which Hillenburg was asked about spinoffs featuring other characters.

Hillenburg explains, “The show is about SpongeBob, he’s the core element, and it’s about how he relates to the other characters. Patrick by himself might be a bit too much. So I don’t see any spin-offs.” Hillenburg went on to say that he didn’t even want to do another movie. (The third Spongebob film premiered in 2019).

He also explains, “In the animation business, you know, there always used to be the sort of joke. When you run out of ideas, you just do Muppet Babies. Would always say, ‘You know, one of these days, they’re going to want to make SpongeBob Babies. That’s when I’m out of here.’”

Many people were quick to say that it is disrespectful for the producers to go on with an idea like this after what has been already thought of by the creator.
