Indictments Made in Killing of Jam Master Jay

Who Killed Jam Master Jay?

That has been the ongoing question for the last 18 years. The pioneering DJ of Run-DMC, whose real name was Jason Mizell, was killed in 2002 inside a Queens recording studio. The case has remained unsolved.

On Monday afternoon, the US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York held a press conference to announce the indictment of two suspects in the killing. The men, Ronald Washington and Karl Jordan, Jr., were indicted on charges of murder while engaged in drug trafficking, according to two law enforcement officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Ronald Washington, 56, is currently serving a federal prison sentence for robbery. Karl Jordan Jr, 36, was taken into custody on Sunday and previously had gone to prison for shooting Jam Master Jay’s nephew. Jordan Jr. will be arraigned this afternoon via teleconference, and Washington will be arraigned later this week.

What happened that night?

The night Jam Master Jay was killed, he had been playing video games in the lounge of a second-floor studio in Jamaica, Queens. According to authorities, two men climbed the steps, and while one remained by the lounge’s entrance, the second burst in, wearing a mask, shoved a woman aside, put the gun to Jam Master Jay’s head, and fired. A second shot hit the other man in the lounge, Uriel Rincon, in the leg.

Detectives investigated several possible explanations for the shooting, including an alleged music-industry feud with 50-cent and a business deal gone bad.

Jam Master Jay gained fame as the D.J. of the hip-hop trio Run-DMC, which included Joseph Simmons, known as Run, and Darryl McDaniels, known as DMC. He was killed shortly after Run DMC released their 2001 album “Crown Royal”. The group disbanded after his death. In 2018, the Netflix documentary “ReMastered: Who Killed Jam Master Jay” reexamined the evidence from the killing.
