Former Bad Boy Rapper Loon Released From Prison

Former Bad Boy Loon Is Home!

It’s been a long nine years, but Harlem rapper Loon is finally home! Loon, former member of Bad Boy, was arrested on May 7, 2012, for trafficking heroin. He was eventually sentenced in July 2013 to 14 years on charges of conspiracy and possession with the intent to distribute. After serving nine of those 14 years, he was released today (June 29).

Why was Loon released early?

Last month, Loon filed for “compassionate release” due to the outbreak of COVID-19. He had experienced some health concerns while locked up. Today, the New York Post reported that on June 26, U.S. District Judge Terrence Boyle granted Loon his release. His original release date was August 2021, so this was more than a year earlier than expected. Judge Boyle stated coronavirus was an “extraordinary and compelling reason” for the early release and stated the ex-rapper posed no threat to society.

“The Court finds that a sentence reduction would neither minimize the seriousness of the defendant’s offense nor frustrate the promotion of respect for the law and the goals of punishment,” said Judge Boyle. “[Loon] has been in custody for over eight years. During that time, he has maintained good prison conduct.”

Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, Damon Dash, Freeway, and more signed a letter to ask for the release of Loon.

Loon’s journey from the beginning

Chauncey Lamont Hawkins, Loon launched his rap career through fellow ex-Bad Boy star Ma$e. In 2003, Loon got his shot at being a solo artist with his self-titled debut while being signed to Bad Boy. The album featured guest appearances from Missy Elliott, Kelis, and Trina, along with production credits from Akon and Scott Storch. The album peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200.

While in prison, Loon converted to the Nation of Islam. He changed his name to Amir Junaid Muhadith and gave up his hip hop lifestyle. According to reports, Loon plans on laying low and taking care of his sick mom now that he’s home.
