Deion Sanders Named Jackson State Head Coach

Deion Sanders has announced that he will be the new head coach for Jackson State football. This announcement came on his new podcast, “21st and Prime,” as he stated, “God called me to Jackson State.” This was verified by the school on Monday when they announced his role, and Sanders had this to say about the opportunity, “I am truly blessed to be the 21st Head football coach of Jackson State University. It’s my desire to continue this storied tradition and history of JSU and prayerfully bring more national recognition to the athletes, the university, the Sonic Boom of the South, and HBCUs in general.”

The powerful move for the HBCU brings another BIPOC into football’s elite rank.

“Coach Prime,” received a grand entrance, complete with a full band and police escort for this monumental occasion. This marks the first time that Sanders will coach collegiate level football, as he is currently finishing his coaching obligations as an offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian School in Cedar Hill, Texas.

Trinity Christian School is a college prep school that accommodates K-12th grade students which may raise some concerns for Jackson State fans. The jump from coaching high school football to college football may not be easy, but Sanders’ resume speaks for itself. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall Of Fame, has also played in Major League Baseball, and is currently coaching the largest Christian school in South Dallas.

Deion has addressed this issue as well stating, “A lot of people are going to say, ‘Why?’ But honestly, man, I’ve been offered pro jobs, so people know. I could be an assistant in any college, or a head coach in any college, but at such a time as this, God called me to Jackson State and me to these men.”

The school is also happy to host him and his coaching style, with the school’s athletic director Ashley Robinson saying, “Coach Sanders is student-athlete centered and cares about young men and their wellbeing beyond the football field. We expect to compete for and win championships at Jackson State, and Coach Sanders will help us achieve those goals.” It looks like Coach Sanders is invested for the long haul.
