CDC Employees Call Out Years Of Toxic Racial Aggression

A letter of petition has been circling the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The letter calls for the Federal agency to address “ongoing and recurring acts of racism and discrimination” against black employees at the CDC. As of today, there have been 1,200 employees that have signed this letter and the number of signatures are going up by the day!

On June 30, a letter had been sent to Robert Redfield, the CDC Director. People who wrote the letter addressed the call for change for “coronavirus pandemic disproportion impact on black people” along with the killings Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks,  George Floyd, and Ahmaud Arbery. This letter was published and NPR has a copy.

“In light of recent calls for justice across the country and around the world, we, as dedicated public health professionals, can no longer stay quiet to the widespread acts of racism and discrimination within  CDC that are in fact, undermining the agency core mission. We are hurt. We are angry. We are exhausted. And ultimately, we fear that, despite the global protest, little will be done to address the systemic racism we face each and every day.”

The director of the CDC received the letter and stated that ”CDC is committed to fostering a fair, equitable, and inclusive environment in which staff can openly share their concerns with agency leadership.” Camara Phyllis Jones says “ Redfield’s response did not address the specific request for action in the letter. I find that disheartening and disrespectful.”

The letter states that “systemic racism is not just a concept perpetrated outside these walls. It’s a crushing reality for people of color in their daily lived experiences here at the CDC.” Over the years, hundreds of Equal Employment Opportunity complaints have been filed by black employees and the majority of the complaints have not been resolved.  A demand for action has been placed all throughout the letter for addressing racism in the CDC and diversifying senior leadership.

Keep up with how the CDC handles this with DSHH.
