Brady struggles with mental health
In a recent interview with PEOPLE magazine, Brandy opened up about her mental health. Growing up, I think we all wanted to be a child star. The life of childhood stardom seemed so perfect, money, fame, what more could a person want. As we get older, we began to start to see that life is about much more than money and fame. I’m sure being famous as a child has its perks, but it definitely has its pitfalls as well. So often, we see child stars grow up to become depressed adults. That depression can come from a myriad of things, but not having what most would consider a “regular childhood” is probably atop the list.
In her interview, Brandy opened up about the pressure she felt trying to uphold the “perfect” image. In 2002 when Brandy was 23 years old, she revealed to the world that she had gotten married. Shortly after her marriage was announced, she announced that she was pregnant. The truth was, she was pregnant, but not married. News eventually broke that the two were never wed, and Brandy said she felt that made people view her differently.

Brandy and daughter Sy’rai
In 2006, Brandy was involved in a car crash that killed another person. It was at this time when she said she became super depressed. The singer said “I remember laying in bed super depressed, I told myself, ‘so, you’re just going to go out like this? That’s wack. You have a daughter. If you can’t do it for yourself, do it for her because this is not the way to leave a mark in her life”.
Overcoming
Brandy credits her daughter Sy’rai for pulling her out of her depression. Overcoming depression isn’t easy for anyone. Congrats to Brandy for coming out of a dark place and having the strength and courage to open up about it.
