Breaking: Atlanta Artist Baby Boy Slain in Shooting

Herman Gibbs III better known in Atlanta as Baby Boy was found dead Tuesday night.

On Tuesday, two separate shootings occurred within a two-hour time span. The first shooting happened around 9:30 at the Life at Greenbriar apartments on Campbellton Road according to police. Authorities found two men with multiple gunshot wounds. One of the men was dead at the scene and the other was reportedly in stable condition later Tuesday night.

About two-and-a-half hours later, authorities were called to a tire and auto repair shop heading east on the same road and discovered two unidentified men lying in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. Baby Boy is believed to have been the victim in the second shooting as the tire shop was located nearby a music studio.

There has been a spike in gun violence especially among music artists and while the numbers in gun violence continue to rise, another musical contributor has lost their lives to the dark culprit. For decades, gun violence and the music industry typically run parallel with one another.

According to AJC, 93 people were shot in Atlanta between May 31 to June 27, which is a 46-count increase during the same time frame last year. In Atlanta, 14 people died of homicide in that window, compared to six during the same time block in 2019.

Baby Boy was in the prime of his career during the Young LA and J-Money era. The time when teens and young adults in Atlanta would line up to fall in Figure 8 or the Libra. A time in which playful melodies and catchy hooks paired with dance sequences flooded radio waves in the A.

Baby Boy brought singles  “Getting Money” featuring Young Dro and”Stuntin” (video below) a popular hit featuring Atlanta artist Young LA. I’m pretty sure if you were apart of that era, you know Baby Boy’s voice was an added touch to a track. At one point, the artist was signed to Money Maker Records but parted ways with the label in 2002 due to stunted growth.

Family, friends, and supporters send condolences on Twitter

Though police have not disclosed the names of victims, some of Baby Boy’s fans, supporters, and friends send condolences to the artist.

A young woman posted Baby Boy on her page a week ago to her Instagram account but updated the photo’s caption confirming the artist’s passing. From the looks of it, the woman and Baby Boy were romantically involved.

Baby Boy performed at Parking Lot Concert before shooting

Just before the singer’s untimely passing, Baby Boy performed at The Parking Lot Concert Series concert. The late artist captioned the video, “#ParkingLotConcert Performance…Me And My Bro @yungla_ went crazy if you wasn’t there here is your chance to see what you missed 🤷🏽‍♂️💪🏽.”

Police have not found a link between the two shootings and are working to determine what initiated the incidents. Atlanta’s homicide count has risen to 141 with one month left in the calendar year.
