The series Queen Nzinga takes place in the 17th century, with a daring princess who defends her people in the guerrilla war against many combatants and the Portuguese slavers.
Nzinga does everything and anything to fight for her people, she goes through a variety of obstacles life-threatening with every move she makes.
She is the first female ruler who enjoined to be called King. In a kingdom powered by male, and slavery STARZ shows the real story of the West African warrior, and her determination to fight for freedom for her people despite what she comes across.
We can expect to see Yetide Badaki play the main role of Queen Nzinga.
Abudu is overexcited to be producing such an impactful series, especially since Africa has so many stories that has yet been told.
“The continent of Africa has a treasure trove of stories that are yet to be told. Queen Nzingha is a story that I have wanted to tell for a long time, so when EbonyLife Studios finally found a home for this project at Starz and Lionsgate, it was a dream come true.”
”We are happy to be at the forefront of forging these new partnerships with such an incredible team of creatives, because it is truly about sharing our local stories with a global audience – stories that are historical, authentic and progressive.”
The Real Princess Warrior
Queen Anna Nzinga was a resilient African leader of Angola.
She stood by her people as the demand for human trade increased and were threatened by the Portuguese, and on multiple counts they tried to colonize Luanda which is the now name of Angola.
There was a desire for the region as human trade skyrocketed especially in New World colonies like Brazil, which increased the need for colonization for economic control.
This is when the kingdom was in great danger, but Queen Nzinga helped change their lives.
The kingdom was not only being attacked by the Portuguese but also African neighbors.
Nzinga had however came up with a strategic plan to help her people. She realized instead of being a slave supply it was a better idea to act as a mediator.
To prevent Portuguese raids, she created vile allies such as with Portugal.
Throughout her journey, she has had a big effect on Luanda, and the STARZ series will help spread her story.
